Artist and Object Project

The artist I was given for this project is called Marian Bantjes. She is a Canadian graphic artist who is famous for her vector art approach to design. When researching Marian Bantjes I was immediately impressed with her designs and style of her work. She uses the program ‘Illustrator’ to create a lot of her designs, which gives her work a clean, sharp finish.
The object that I was given was ‘Egg Box’. My initial thought about how to combine an egg box with Marian Bantjes was to decorate an egg box in her style, using pattern and shapes. I collected a few egg boxes and coloured them with spray paints then decorated them with white pen to create a Bantjes-style design. However this didn’t turn out how I wanted to, it looked amateur and child-like. I had a think about more ideas for my final design and I decided to think how Bantjes does and use Illustrator. Before this project, I had never even heard of this programme so producing work on it proved to be a challenge. After spending hours sitting at a Mac I started to learn more about the programme and decided to focus on typography. I really liked the ‘Want it’ campaign that Bantjes designed earlier this year and the typography she used was the main focus of her work. With this particular project in mind, I started to play about with the different typography that I could make from using ‘Illustrator’. I began to realise how difficult this was and appreciate the time it takes for Bantjes to produce such beautiful work using a computer. I was influenced by the repeated pattern that Bantjes uses in her designs so I tried repeating the words ‘egg box’ to see what outcome I could achieve. I wanted to focus on the visual image of the words egg box because I feel that if Bantjes had been given this project, she would have tackled the problem in this way.
For my final piece I have produced posters showing the designs I have produced on illustrator. I have produced my own typography for the word ‘egg box’ and this has been used as the main focus of my designs. My posters have been influenced by Marian Bantjes because of the colours I have used and the style of fonts I have designed. From now on I will defiantly keep using illustrator, it has helped me immensely with this project and without it my designs wouldn’t have been in the style of my given artist.

This is the web reference I have used throughout my project-
